Free Museum After Hours

If it’s hard to get to the museum during our regular hours, this is the moment for you! Bring the whole family for a FREE after-hours event featuring kids’ activities, a chance to see our new exhibitions, enjoy an artistic activity, grab a drink at the cash bar with signature cocktails, and much more!

THIS MONTH: “Miniature Trees: An Introduction to the Ancient Art of Bonsai” with Kathy Schlessinger! The translation of bonsai simply means pot or tray planted. However, bonsai is one of the oldest forms of ‘living’ art as trees and plants are grown in containers, artistically designed, but emphasizing their natural habitat qualities. Whether you have a yard, a patio or a small apartment you can enjoy multiple plants in your environment with the right care. This presentation will provide a historical overview of the Chinese origin, arrival and evolution in Japan and its later importance in the US at our National Arboretum. We will touch briefly on the descriptions of the bonsai styles and designs, tools, general horticulture procedures and container selection. We will wrap up by featuring examples of different plants used to create bonsai. Following the presentation will be time for Q&A.

We always host an artist trading card swap at After Hours. Download a set of Trading Cards here that you can print out at home, or swing by the museum and pick up a pre-printed set.
