The Shape of the Prairie: Keith Jacobshagen

This retrospective honors Keith Jacobshagen and his lifelong exploration of the Midwestern landscape. Through painting and drawing, Jacobshagen distills the prairie into expansive horizons, shifting light, and subtle atmospheric changes—inviting a contemplative experience of place.

This exhibition will be on view from May 16th - August 16th, 2026

Hollis Williford: Sculptures, Paintings & Drawings

Featuring the work of Hollis Williford, this exhibition brings together sculpture, painting, and drawing that reflect a strong sense of narrative and material presence. Williford’s bronze figures—often depicted as hunters or travelers—are rendered with expressive, textured surfaces that retain the immediacy of the artist’s hand. Their gestures and objects suggest quiet, layered stories, balancing realism with abstraction.

This exhibition will be on view from May 16th - August 16th, 2026

Kent Bicentennial Portfolio: Spirit of Independence

As the United States celebrates its 250th anniversary in 2026, the Albrecht-Kemper Museum of Art presents Kent Bicentennial Portfolio: Spirit of Independence. This exhibition reunites a remarkable portfolio of prints created in 1975 as part of the nation’s Bicentennial celebration.

The Kent Bicentennial Program asked twelve prominent American artists a simple question: What does “independence” mean to you? Their responses explored American history, culture, identity, and everyday life through a wide range of artistic perspectives. The portfolio features works by renowned artists including Robert Indiana, Jacob Lawrence, Alex Katz, Audrey Flack, Edward Ruscha, Red Grooms, Larry Rivers, Marisol Escobar, Fritz Scholder, Will Barnet, Colleen Browning, and Joseph Hirsch.

Commissioned by Lorillard as a cultural initiative leading up to the 1976 Bicentennial, complete portfolios were donated to museums nationwide, making contemporary American art accessible to a broad audience. Part of the Albrecht-Kemper’s permanent collection, the full portfolio has not been exhibited together in more than twenty years.

Also on view is a companion exhibition featuring seventeen American landscapes from the museum’s permanent collection. Through paintings, prints, sculpture, and photography, artists explore the diverse geography of the United States, from rural countryside to the dramatic American West.

Together, these exhibitions invite visitors to reflect on themes of independence, identity, and place through the eyes of American artists across generations.

This exhibition will be on view from July 1 - September 13, 2026
