Born in Honolulu, Hawaii, Young
moved with his family to Florida when he was fourteen. He
studied printmaking at Sarasota’s Ringling School of Art and
Design. Inspired by the art of Winslow Homer, Edward Hopper, and
Andrew Wyeth, Young taught himself how to paint in watercolor,
the medium which he is best known. He mastered the drybrush
technique, and often uses only the primary colors of red,
yellow, and blue to achieve his lifelike paintings. Young achieved success and garnered critical
acclaim early in his career, highlighted by winning first prize
in American Artist’s 1985 national art competition. In
1998, Young became the youngest living artist to have a work
sold at Christie’s, New York.
