Fairfield Porter was an active member of the New York art scene in the mid-20th century, during a period best-known abstract and nonrepresentational art.  Porter created images of his family, friends, and surroundings using a loose brushstrokes and carefully constructed settings influenced by French painters of the early part of the century.  The subject of this painting, Porter’s daughter Katherine is seated in chair that is starkly divided from the exterior world.  The attention to architecture in many of Porter’s paintings reflects the influence of his architect father.
